Changing the built-in domain
As mentioned earlier in this chapter, your current Squarespace built-in domain will currently be some combination of your name and a random string of letters/numbers. Let's change this to something more appropriate by going to the Domains panel located under the Website subheading. You will most likely never use this built-in domain after your website is live, since you will probably want to use something like www.mysite.com. However, while you're building your site, it's a good idea to use a Squarespace domain with your brand name to make it easier for you to get to your website when you want to edit it, and to give a more positive impression should you wish to share your in-progress site with colleagues or friends for feedback. To change the built-in domain, click on your current built-in domain name to open the editing panel, replace the current letters and numbers with the name you wish to use, and click on Rename. A popup confirmation window will appear, and if the name you have chosen is not already in use by someone else, clicking on Confirm will apply the change.
If your brand/company name is made up of common words, you may find that it's already been taken. You can use variations with hyphens between words, or try adding your product or industry, for example: floribunda-flowers.
Once you have successfully applied the change, your browser window will refresh and take you back to the Home Menu, so you will need to navigate to Settings again. However, the address bar at the top should show your new name, like this: https://your-company.squarespace.com.
